Hydrogen Fuel Cells Could Be Used for Cars of the Future

A car convention about the latest auto news was held from March 6 to March 16 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland. All leading car manufacturers showed their new models and there were some very interesting offerings, which included machines with hydrogen fuel cells for cars and other models of the future. One of the most interesting offerings was that of Pininfarina's Sintesi. Technologies are changing our lives daily and it is great when new technologies are developed to improve our lives.

The car in question had the aim to disseminate intelligence from various sources regarding security and traffic conditions. Sintesi can talk to the environment - i.e. the other vehicles, the road and the city itself and this does not interfere in any way with the autonomy of the motorists. When you look at the car from the outside, it looks much like a simple sports car but its exterior is aerodynamic and this makes it different. The concept behind is called 'liquid packaging'.

However, the most distinguishing feature of the car is its four hydrogen fuel cells, or the Quaddrivium Fuel Cells concept, as the manufacturer called it. Each of the four hydrogen fuel cells is positioned on a wheel and can power it with 20kw. In addition to that, the car has an electric motor and a secondary battery, which is powered from solar panels and regenerative breaking. The electronic architecture takes use of modular power. This modular power is dependent on the driving conditions.

The headlights have radar and tele-cameras, which further eases the information processing. Sintesi's design was too futuristic for the audience and for many people it is difficult to imagine that such a car can travel on the streets today. But a closer look at the design of Sintesi shows that it uses only technologies, which are available today, so it is possible to use it now.

If there are more hydrogen fuel cells for cars and people who use them, the streets will be a better place. Sintesi was the favorite car of many auto publications. The fact that Pininfarina has used a hydrogen fuel cell for cars means that any other car manufacturer, for instance General Motors or BMW, can do the same. Actually, there is official information that General Motors and BMW are launching series, which use hydrogen fuel cells for cars.

Even now BMW is performing tests on hydrogen powered vehicles and General Motors is going to do the same very soon. It is possible that hydrogen fuel cells for cars will become popular and many hydrogen-powered cars will be seen on the streets of rich countries. For now, these cars are very expensive and only the rich can afford them. Nevertheless, as time goes by and manufacturers start the mass production of these cars, prices will inevitably drop and hydrogen powered cars will become more affordable.

For now, you can just get a hydrogen fuel cell for cars and wait for the prices of hydrogen-powered vehicles to drop. You can start saving money now and when the prices decrease substantially, get a new car. Decades ago, when hydrogen fuel cells for cars were unheard of, Sintesi would have been a dream, while now it is reality.
